Funeral for Gaudreau Brothers Set for Today at St. Mary Magdalen Church

The hockey community will gather today to honor Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, who tragically lost their lives in a cycling accident last week. The joint funeral service will be held at noon at St. Mary Magdalen Church in Media, with a livestream available on the Columbus Blue Jackets website. The Gaudreau family has received an overwhelming show of support, with over $627,000 raised through a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral expenses and support Matthew's wife, Madeline, who is expecting their first child in December.

Johnny, a seven-time NHL All-Star, and Matthew, a former pro and coach, were beloved in the hockey world, as evidenced by the candlelight vigils held in their honor.

Remembering Rick Olivieri, Cheesesteak Royalty from Drexel Hill

Rick Olivieri, grandson of cheesesteak legend Pat Olivieri (Pat’s King of Steaks), passed away at 57 after a decade-long battle with early-onset dementia. A Drexel Hill native, Rick was the force behind Rick’s Steaks at Reading Terminal ($$) and expanded his family’s cheesesteak empire to Citizens Bank Park, Lincoln Financial Field, and even a festival in France. Remembered as a kind man and devoted father, Rick leaves behind his wife, Debi, and two daughters, Kristin and Chelsie, along with a lasting legacy in Philly’s cheesesteak history.

Cornog Stadium, watch as local officers trade their badges for football helmets in a fun-filled game designed to strengthen ties between the police and the youth of our community. It will be exciting to see who comes out on top this year. Either way, it’s a win for community spirit and an evening of great entertainment you won’t want to miss!

LOCAL BUSINESS

ChristianaCare coming to Aston

Big news for Aston: ChristianaCare just announced one of its two new micro hospitals is set to pop up across from IceWorks, bringing more accessible healthcare to Delco. These “neighborhood hospitals” are small but mighty, offering 24/7 emergency services, 10 inpatient beds, and high-tech diagnostics like CT scans and X-rays. Slated to open in 2025 (fingers crossed), the facility will cater to less severe medical needs at a lower cost. Looks like getting quality care in the neighborhood is about to be a whole lot easier.

Upper Darby Passes 1% Income Tax, Tightens Meeting Rules 💸

In a busy meeting, Upper Darby Council approved a 1% earned income tax set to kick in by 2025, projected to bring in $18 million to tackle the township’s looming budget deficit. The move didn’t come without pushback, as some residents voiced concerns about the new tax and a newly imposed 5-minute speaking limit during public comment sessions. Despite the debate, the measure passed, with council members citing financial stability as the driving force behind the decision.

Eagles Kick Off the Season with a Win in Brazil! 🇧🇷🏈

The Eagles showed they’ve got some serious fight, pulling off a thrilling 34-29 victory over the Green Bay Packers in their season opener. It wasn’t a smooth ride (let’s erase that 1st quarter from our brains), but they got the job done with some historic performances:

Saquon Barkley’s Debut: The new Eagle made a splash with 109 rushing yards and three touchdowns (2 rushing, 1 receiving). This was the most touchdowns by an Eagle in their debut since Terrell Owens in 2004. Barkley also became the first Eagle since Wilbert Montgomery in 1982 to pull off two rushing and one receiving touchdown in a season opener.

Kellen Moore’s Impact: The new offensive coordinator brought creativity back to the Eagles' playbook. With motion on 65.8% of plays (highest since 2020), the offense looked refreshed and dynamic. Jalen Hurts thrived with motion, going 15 for 21 for 212 yards and 2 TDs, compared to 5 of 13 for 66 yards without it.

Zack Baun’s Career Night: The linebacker stepped up big time with a career-high 15 tackles and two sacks. Baun played every single defensive snap, showing why the Eagles signed him this offseason.

So, despite a rocky start, the Eagles showed they’re ready to soar. Here's to a promising season ahead! 🦅
